One of seven cars built by Ginetta Cars, Ltd. of the UK to compete in the European FIA 2 liter GT Championship, G16-001, the very first of the series, was sold to Art Allen, the Ginetta distributor in southern California in 1968. It was raced in SCCA races on the West Coast for two years and then parked in his garage. where it stayed for the next 18 years. In 1987, G16-001 was purchased by Trevor Needham, a well know Ginetta racer and restorer, and returned to England where it underwent a complete rebuild. The original Coventry Climax 2 liter engine, having been sold previously, the car was fitted with a period correct Lester Owen BMW M10 2 liter. Trevor raced the car in the International Supersports Cup series in Europe from 1992-1997, taking numerous class wins. The car was sold to its third and current owner in 1999 and shipped to the US where it was mechanically restored and brought up to US vintage racing standards by Vintage Racing Services in Connecticut. Of the seven original cars, G16-001 is the only one to have raced in North America. It has had a very successful vintage racing career in SVRA, HSR, Monterey and many other events, taking many wins as well as the SVRA Group 5 and Endurance Championship. G16-001 in now offered for sale having undergone a comprehensive restoration including a new tubular space frame and all new bodywork from the original Ginetta molds. All plumbing, wiring, fire system, fuel cell, instruments are new. Engine and gearbox have recent rebuilds and low hours. This is a very well sorted, fast and beautiful open sports racer capable of winning in any field of comparable cars.

Ginetta built seven of the G16 model specifically to compete in the European 2 liter Championship in 1968. It's primary competitor was the Chevron B6/8. Of the original 7 cars, two were factory entries running BRM 2 liter V8s, two were Climax powered, two were BMW powered and one was powered by a Cosworth FVC. Interestingly, the Walklett brothers, founders of Ginetta had done a deal with Gold Leaf tobacco for sponsorship of the G16s which was snatched away at the last minute by Colin Chapman of Lotus. Without sponsorship, the cars never reached their potential.

Recent Competition History

Over 13 years of vintage racing there have been many class and group wins and podiums. Winner of SVRA Group 5 championship as well as the overall Endurance Race Championship.
