Description:
Finishing auction Dec 2, 5PM. Absolute Auction.. I bought this Devin Porsche in 1973 from a gentlemen that built it to race in the Pittsburgh, PA area. He acquired the Devin "D" chassis from Bill Devin in the winter of 1960 and assembled the car from Porsche Normal components from a donor car he had acquired. It was believed that that the car was campaigned in some of the hillclimbs, gymkhana's and autocross events that were prevalent in the Allegheny County region of Pennsylvania in the '60's. Many Porsche owners participated in these races and the Devin would be a lighter version that excelled in hillclimb, that are now banned by the Porsche Club of America. The car had been campaigned in Porsche silver with maroon accents and also red with the black interior carpet and accents. I got the car when the original builder acquired a wrecked Cobra that he wished to rebuild for racing. He needed to clear his garage and sold me the Devin to do this. I planned to finish the car that was prepped for painting. I drove this car from one garage to another over nearly 40 years and never found the time or money to do anything to the car. It is in the same condition that I bought it in 1973. The car has all of its components including top, bows and side curtains. I no longer can fit into the car, as the seats are molded into the body and it has a large Derrington steering wheel with Stirling Moss autograph etched into it. I can not fit my legs under the wheel and touch the pedals so it is time to sell. It has all the approriate Porsche components with odometer showing 1139 miles. It has Porsche aluminum finned drum brakes and 5 Porsche wheels and tires that were on the car when I bought it. It handles like "it is on rails" and is quite quick. A mechanic that had another Devin D is working to help me prepare this for sale and he is thrilled that EVERYTHING IS CORRECT on this car. Vintage racers have come to recognise the beauty, simplicity and performance of this car.
History
Serial # "DD 7-8" has been verified to be the 20th unit of the 49 production "D"'s that Bill Devin built in El Monte, CA. This car has only been owned by two people, the original builder and myself. I have a clear title for this car, but it has never been registered for the highway. The records indicate that the chassis was shipped to Pittsburgh on March 22 1960. There were active Devin/Porsche drivers in the Western Pennsylvania area due to the frequent hillclimbs, gymkhana's and autocross events at which these cars excelled. One of the current Devin owners has verified the previous statements. After this "Glory-Time" for these cars the Porsche Club of America later banned these hillclimbs due to safety issues. Racing history is being researched with Porsche Club and historical racers and hillclimb associations.Performance Data
