Description:

This beautiful extensively documented Datsun Roadster is usable for Street or Track events. It is ready for a new owner to enjoy on the street or to further the cars rich racing history. The car has been prepared for both street and track use utilizing a pump gas tune engine that can still deliver performance on the track. The cosmetic preparation is in line with the vintage racing history in mind as it was entered in the 2018 Monterey ReUnion Races. The car was one of less than ten Datsun's selected to represent Nissan's racing heritage for The Event at Quail Lodge in 2018. The Quail event was a unique street drive escorted by the CHP from Laguna Seca to the Carmel Valley venue for display, and back. The car has a clean California Title and Registration. The car has been driven about 300 miles on the street to sort out any issues since the build and drives solid and reliable. The car is licensed and registered but is currently in Non Op status for street. The car started as a 1600 Roadster, but with years of hard racing and modifications a decision was made to restore the car to period correct race car preparation. A 1967 2000 Roadster was used as a platform for the restoration. The body was removed from the frame, and both were Rotisserie restored including replacing some of the floor and performing any repairs needed on frame and body. The restoration included using as many original parts as practical and component weight was given consideration throughout the assembly. The car retains few stock or original parts as it was modified in period. The parts list from the current build includes Nissan comp springs, Carerra Racing Shocks, Racing alignment including front camber adjustment, New exhaust from header back. custom steering wheel, stainless steel braided brake and clutch lines, Airhart Magnesium master cylinder, tie down loops on rear spring mounts for towing, bucket racing seat. Leather was used for door stops, inner door handles, trunk latch, and hand laced wiring harness cover. The rear end ratio is 3.9 with an open differential matched to a four speed transmission for reduced weight. The Engine was purchased as a low hour rebuild from a car purpose built for auto cross competition. Once received it was disassembled, inspected, the bores were honed, valves lapped, a hotter cam installed, and then painted. The pistons and rods appeared to be lightened and balanced. The SU style carbs were disassembled, cleaned and inspected. The ignition was updated to an optical trigger high energy ignition. The compression appeared to be standard, and the car runs on premium gas. The engine has completed one race. Issues with the car: There is an oil leak at the back of the motor. I put cardboard down and get some oil, but the oil level has not moved. The chrome parts have surface pitting, tail lights faded and cracked. Some paint wrinkle near master cylinder, but have not found a leak, so may be a spill from lid seal or filling. Both doors appear to have been replaced as one has some welding around inside door latch handle, and passenger side has uneven gap. Please review the pictures carefully as they are to be considered part of the listing information and representation of the car. Will be glad to show car or send specific pictures you may want. I have sold cars and parts to Europe and Austrialia. Can help coordinate for you some, but you have to have your shipper pick up at my home. Car and title released when funds clear bank.

History

This car has significant racing provenance in Southern California and is believed to be the winningest Datsun in history. This is based on interviews with prior owners and additional research available. The car has attended the SCCA Runoffs multiple times in both 1600 and 2000 configuration. Not one, but two of the early owner/drivers were paid by Nissan to race the car. Dick Roberts who ran Nissan Competition also raced the car. A considerable effort was made to track down and interview prior owners all the way back to 1968. The car comes with an SCCA log book and has attended the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and was only the seventh Japanese car ever accepted to this prestigious event.

Competition History
