1964 Ferrari 330 America S/N 5109 Only 50 examples of the Ferrari 330 America were produced. S/N 5109 is a rare Ferrari that bridged the gap between two successful series of "Family Ferraris" those being the 250 GTE and the 330 GT 2+2. Near the end of the production of the popular 250 GTE in 1963, Ferrari held back 50 GTE's and fitted them with the new 4-liter Type 209 V-12, This engine generated 300 HP at 6,600 RPM and was to become the powerplant for the 330 GT series which started in 1964 and would run through 1967. The 330 America, with 300 HP and 3,300 pounds was a potent highway machine with speeds over 150 MPH! Best of all, the car could cruise all day at this speed. While the 330 America was a tame-looking sedan, it was also a sophisticated machine....all Ferrari V-12. S/N 5109 has two interesting histories. The original owner was John Bond, the founder, editor and publisher of Road and Track magazine. Mr. Bond owned the car for 15 years and regularly drove it between his homes in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. His notes, letters and service records are a part of this sale. In those notes he speaks glowingly of the 115 mile drive between San Bernardino and Palm Springs taking about an hour and 15 minutes or, an average of 100 MPH. Between 1978 and 1988 there were two other owners who drove the car very little and then it was sold to a Seattle investor who kept it in heated storage for 10 years. S/N 5109 has a total of 35,000 original miles. The present owner acquired the car in 1998 and after enjoying the thrill of his first Ferrari decided to take the 330 America into the world of vintage racing. Off came the bumpers, the headlights and other weighty objects. In went a full roll cage, Recaro seat, Sparco wheel, heavier sway bar, bigger radiator, fire systems, five-point harness, a true five-speed transmission, Campagnolo alloy wheels and much other competitive equipment to make the 330 America safe, race-compliant and competitive. Over $35,000 was spent on race preparation alone. And competitive it was. In two years of vintage racing with the highly organized (and competitive) SOVREN group in Seattle, S/N 5109 took in two wins, three seconds and three thirds, all with a driver new to the sport. It was a great crowd pleaser. The growl of a real Ferrari V-12.
