Description:
1971 Ford/Mercury Capri 2.0L Race Car FOR SALE The engine was completely rebuilt in 2015 by Ivey Engineering (Ford racing engine specialist in Portland, OR. Over $5500 spent on the engine alone). The engine has only dyno time + 1 hour of track time. The rebuild included forged Ivey pistons and CR connecting rods, plus the addition of electronic ignition. Also, at that time the original downdraft carburetor was replaced with a side-draft 45 DCOE Weber. Dyno sheet shows 170 hp at 6600 RPM and a flat torque curve with a max of 143 ft-lb at 6000 RPM. There is plenty of power to slide the car around on track. The car has only been entered in 3 competitive events (SCCA vintage race weekends) and 3 track days during my ownership. I have done several upgrades as listed below. Even before the engine upgrades it was competitive with other cars with similar displacement (Datsun 510, Alfa, Volvo, Morgan). It is ready to go racing anytime- I wouldn’t hesitate to enter it this weekend. The brakes are bled, oil and filter have been changed and the paint is waxed- TRULY TURN-KEY! It isn’t perfect. The paint has some nicks, and the body has some rust (pinhole in driver’s side floor, larger area inner passenger door), I suspect there is considerable filler in the fenders. The dash is cracked and the headliner is torn on the passenger side. The handbrake is not currently operational (out of adjustment). Since buying the car the following has been added/done: New paint New battery and emergency shut-off switch New Kirkey aluminum seat New removeable steering wheel/hub Urethane steering box bushings Replaced Capri transmission with Ford Pinto 4-speed unit (better linkage and reliability) Removed vacuum brake booster (to make room for Weber) and replaced with new master cylinder/hydraulics, added front-rear brake bias adjustment New water pump New starter solenoid New rear brake cylinders New clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing and flywheel machined New exhaust with low-profile muffler New chin spoiler and custom valance grille New crankcase breather tank and radiator overflow tank Fitted cover (California Car Covers) The most recent work includes: New/never used front rotors New/never used Ferodo DS3000 racing front brake pads New/never used rear brake shoes New/never used Hoosier Street TD tires mounted on period lightweight 3-piece wheels New/never used RaceQuip 5-point restraint/seat belts Other features: Full roll cage including side impact protection Oil cooler with remote oil filter attachment 1.25†front sway bar 0.75†Rear sway bar Front strut tower brace and modified/reinforced tower strut attachments Flattened rear leaf springs. Fire suppression system Fuel cell and electric fuel pump Period tachometer, oil pressure, oil temperature, fuel pressure gauges. New Autometer water temperature gauge G Force window safety net I will include the flatbed trailer with front gravel guard for $750 with the car if desired. After funds are received, I can deliver the car free of charge within 200 miles, possibly further for a fee. There are spares available/included: A dismantled 2.0L block and cylinder head 1 Capri transmission and 1 Pinto transmission Set of steel wheels with new street radials (see photos) Set of alloy wheels with older Hoosier Street TD tires (see photos) Original carburetor and manifold Exhaust manifold/header Racing clutch disc New front brake pads New rear struts Water pump and belt Oil filter Distributor cap/plugs and wires/coil Service manuals also included The car has an interesting racing history- a few logbooks that date back to the early 1980s. It raced as an SCCA ITB sedan in Southern California and more recently in vintage racing in New Mexico. It is sold on a bill of sale only as there is no title. I purchased the car in 2012 and used it to get through driver training, the novice licensing process and onto my full regional SCCA license. I am selling because I have not had enough time to drive the car and would eventually like to graduate to something open-wheeled. Sold AS IS, no refunds or guarantees.
