Description:
1969 Palliser Winkelmann WDB-2 Formula B car. Originally owned by Phil Reilly, founder of Phil Reilly and Company. The car was campaigned in the Professional Formula Continental series by partners Phil Reilly, Jon Woodner (driver) and Joe Huffaker, Sr. (Engine builder and chassis specialist). This car was entered under the name “Xcar†as the partners made significant improvements, including unique side pods which originally held additional fuel cell capacity, modified front suspension for better anti-dive performance, twin rear engine bay to roll hoop bracing and some very unique aerofoil tube-mounted side mirrors. After many exchanges of ownership, the car was found hanging in the rafters of a barn near Humboldt, CA in 2010. After undergoing a 3 year professional restoration, it began racing in CSRG vintage events in late 2012. The car won the 2012 CSRG perpetual McKee Award for best restoration. Car has been driven in 6 race events since restoration, and has turned lap times comparable to leading Brabham Formula B cars. This car is routinely recognized by competitors as the most beautifully prepared car at the track – and it has the performance capability to match it. The restoration included: • Complete frame restoration and powder coat • Newly fabricated suspension parts (all plating is electroless nickel) • Koni double adjustable steel shock absorbers with Eibach road springs • New belly pan (steel and aluminum) • Aluminum internal skins • New aluminum side pods and steel framing • New bearings, heim joints and spherical joints • New front caliper mounting plates • New fasteners • All new Aeroquip/XRP hydraulic lines (brakes, clutch, engine oil) • Brake calipers, master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder rebuilt • New heat treated front wheel studs • New Eagle fuel bladder (under seat) • New fire suppression system • Restored Smith gauges (including Chronometric tach) • New kart-style steering wheel • New seat upholstery • New C&R custom radiator, aluminum lines and silicone hoses (except for 90 degree at motor) • New aluminum radiator ducting (lost in storage) • Restored in-period Revolution wheels and new rim halves as required (from England) • All new electrical system including switches, wiring, Super Starter, Bendix- type fuel pump, main disconnect switch and auxiliary plug • Custom oil tank located in side pod • New Setrab oil cooler located in side pod • New Odyssey battery located in side pod • New custom aluminum overflow canisters and bracket • New Hasselgren Engineering Lotus twin cam engine (legal 1600cc displacement using newly cast Ford block). 207 HP, original Lotus cylinder head (not a repro), Carrillo rods, forged crankshaft, 45 DCOE carburetors with K&N airbox filter, new flywheel and single plate AP clutch, stainless steel tri-Y stepped headers (straight tail pipe and silencer included). History
Eight of these cars were originally manufactured in 1969. Seven are currently accounted for in the Palliser cars registry. This chassis was sold to Phil Reilly (then of Huffaker Engineering, now of Phil Reilly and Co.)in 1969 by Bob Winkelmann and his shop in Sausalito, CA. Phil Reilly, Jon Woodner (driver) and Joe Huffaker, Sr. (engine and chassis expert)campaigned in SCCA's professional Formula Continental series. The car was sold in 1972 to another Huffaker employee who modified the nose to a Palliser sports car nose (which is included in the sale of the car.) After many additional exchanges of ownership, the car was found hanging in the rafters of a barn near Humboldt, CA in 2010. (I have letters from all but one previous owner demonstrating its lineage). After undergoing a 3 year professional restoration, it began racing in CSRG vintage events in late 2012. The car won the 2012 CSRG perpetual McKee Award for best restoration. Car has been driven in 6 race events since restoration.
