Description:
This Mercury GT is one of three known survivors. It has a square tube semi-monocoque frame
with a body that is similar in appearance to a Lotus 23C. The car
has substantially engineered running gear. The uprights are massive
alloy fabrications with alloy hubbed discs, Girling alloy calipers
and alloy adjustable KONIs. The front suspension is unequal A-arm
with sway bar hung from a solid alloy bulkhead. Rear
suspension is similar to a Brabham BT8, a radius rod arrangement
with parallel lower links.
Wheels are MRE/Brabham Magnesium fitted with Dunlop treaded racing
tires. A fuel cell is located in the left monocoque sponson, a battery in the right
sponson. The fire system fits in the covered area under the knees.
History
Mercury sports racers were built in London from 1962 to the early
1970's by D&A Shells Ltd. 247 High Street Stratford.
Founders Dennis Pollard and Alan Fowler specialized in providing
body kits for customers to convert their own cars (Merlyn MK6's
and Lotus 23's) into closed GT cars. In addition they produced a
small number of space frames to fit their fiberglass bodies.
