Description:
Possibly the best racing Turner in the U.S.A., very successful race history including a national SVRA class championship in Group 1 and was the 1991 European champion in GT Group 6. We have assorted race records for the car going back to 1991. ----- Turner? One of those wonderful limited production English classics...think Marcos, Elva, Ginetta, TVR, HRG....even Lotus 'till the started winning World Championships. From 1955 to 1966, Turner built around 670 sports cars. And these cars won a LOT of races and championships. ----- And here is a (summary of the) story.....Jack Turner, an engineer and craftsman, conceived of the idea of making a fun little sports car. Designed a very rigid chassis, hung Austin A30 suspension, back axle, brakes, engine, trans, etc...and clothed it in a neat little fiberglass body. Good idea, huh? ----- Offered with the original 803cc engine, initially, many early cars went to the BMC 948cc Morris Minor/ Austin engine, and a few even left the works with Coventry Climax (all FWA other than at least one FWB). FAST little cars. ----- Then the big Austin company must have thought 'hey, thats a good idea.' And produced their own version of Turner's idea...we call it the Mk I Sprite...the English call it a 'Frogeye.' Heavier with a steel body, far less sophisticated rear suspension, but a big seller. And big money maker, presumably, for Austin. ----- And somehow, the pencil pushers in accounting felt that Turner's tiny operation was a competitor and by the early 1960s, stopped selling Turner component parts at a dealer's prices. Hence forcing Turner to redesign their chassis for Triumph front suspension and Ford engine/trans. ----- Oh well, a long story. But a fun one...including the reason some of the factory records are gone...seems like some local hoodlums tried to break into the works, one night, and used a torch to cut through some panels...and ignited the company file cabinet! ----- Meanehile, back to this car....small, light, incredibly agile, very fast, super rare, and easy to service and maintain. All of which sounds like the ideal historic race car. And they are. ----- If you want to get into the world of vintage and historic racing, it would be hard to imagine a better all 'round car than this Turner. ----- Specifications: all internal panels replaced with aluminum this car is VERY light), engine is a 1275 block linered down to 1114cc, steel billet crank, Carrillo steel rods, Forged JE race pistons, 13.5:1 compression ratio, big valve Richard Longman head, roller rockers, APT SPV4 race cam, aluminum flywheel, Tilton 7.25 clutch with annular throw out bearing, rib case trans with straight cut close ratio gears, 4.2 diff with LSD, steel competition Winners Circle back axle shafts, double bearing hubs, disc brakes with Hawk competition pads, uprated front suspension using all Sprite components, 4 link rear suspension with Panhard rod, Koni adjustable rear tube shocks, fuel cell, roll bar, Hoosiers on Minilite type alloy wheels. ----- A sensational, VERY SERIOUS small bore racer.
