History

Built by Joe Huffaker as a kit car in 1961 for BMC's (British Motor Car Distributors Ltd., San Francisco) competition dept. These cars were sold ready to race for $3995.00. When Joe Huffaker joined BMC's Competition dept. late in 1959 and designed the first BMC Juniors, little did he know that he had produced the most successful front-engined Formula Junior car going. The first season of campaigning under the BMC banner netted nine first, two seconds and only three DNF's, none of which were caused by engine or drive line failure. They not only won races , but they sold cars, delivering 22 in a single year. As the competition in Formula Junior grew hotter, a wave of new machines from England cropped up and, with their more refined suspensions and rear-mounted engines, soon began monopolizing the winner's circle. Not being one to stand still and let someone else pick up all the brass, Huffaker began designing a new chassis with hopes of cutting down on the frontal area, improving road-holding, and at the same time keeping the price well within the reach of the average competitor. A prototype running chassis was assembled for test purposes and was built in complete secrecy, with suspension and engine mounts made adjustable to be changed with little or no trouble, so proper design ideas could be tested and proven out. Rear engine location was chosen to simplify construction and eliminate any possible power loss through an off-set drive line. Still using the BMC A engine though now factory prepped, Huffaker began supplying Mk-II Juniors in kit form.

Competition History

The car raced in the VARA series in the late 70's and early 80's by Jim Baillie. Owned by Ron Walden. This race car has been in storage for at least 18 years, current owner is second generation.
