Description:

Unfortunately, we missed the Pittsburg Vintage Grand Prix at Schenley this year , and as age continues to catch up with me, I think it's time to part with one of my favorite smallbore cars. This car is part of the American Racing History . It has a VSCCA logbook ,and it raced at the downtown Pittsburg Vintage GP at Schenley Park 2010 and 2011, and should certainly be welcome at any smallbore ... a little Formula Car constructed from Fiat 600 components, This rear engine Formula car was located in a Northern Ohio horse training barn, quite a number of years ago. It was in quite good, condition, including the nicely upholstered drivers seat and dash, and the 'running' drivetrain was complete.. We cleaned and painted the car several years ago, and built the motor as well. A couple minor changes to the car, were made , including new tach, and some driveshaft joint and water pump changes, as well as changing the master cylinder to dual circuit for safety, and ATL fuel cell, but the car still retains an appropriate 'period' appearance . Chassis is tube frame, with aluminum body that was coated with thin layer of fiberglass. The aluminum is formed over a 1/4" square framework. Nose of body tilts forward, giving easy access , and rear upper body removes easily for engine access.. Car was very well thought out, including the sloping radiator with electic fan. A porcelein knife switch for battery disconnect is still in place, but the function is now by an contempory external cutoff, for safety reasons Wheelbase is 64", 12 or 13" tires Fiat motor is 817cc short stroke crank with Weber 30DIC, headers, lightened flywheel, balanced, 11-1 compression runs 110 octane, builds rpms quickly, shifts 7000 rpm , and the car gets a bit under 100mph. Car weighs 870 Even with short wheelbase, at 5 '11" and 190 lbs I am comfortable. I do not use the original seat, in order to meet rollbar requirements, but the original seat comes with the car for show. Car is great fun to drive. Drum brakes on all 4 corners, at Pittsburg 2011 it started about 14th and finished 7th , and spent the entire race door to door with a Double Bubble Zagato Coupe that had a much better driver, he finished 8th..and it was one of the better duels that weekend. The car conforms to the 500cc Club of America original rules for class B , which was formulated to encourage sanctioning homemade pre-Junior type race cars, before the SCCA began sanctioning Juniors, although we have not located any definitive history ....lots of " I think" and "I seem to remember" ..but nothing concrete If you recognize the Vintage Sport is "about the cars" , and if you are seriously interested in Historical American Road Racing , and preserving, while enjoying, a fun to drive race car, this might be the car for you!
