  • Driven by Christian Fittipaldi and Roberto Moreno in 10 races during the 1999 CART Season
  • Achieved two podiums with Fittipaldi, and one podium with Moreno
  • Presented in its period-correct #11 Fittipaldi Kmart/Duracell livery
  • Documented by Newman/Haas team chassis records for test, qualifying, and race use

Entering the third year of their exclusive chassis development partnership, for the 1999 CART season Swift Engineering and Newman/Haas Racing unveiled the 010.c model, as offered here. The 010.c’s 894-horsepower “XD” engine boasted the highest output of any Ford-Cosworth racing product, exceeding even their contemporaneous V-10 Formula One powerplant. The XD’s redline arrived at 14,500 rpm, and top speed of the 010.c—when in superspeedway configuration—was reported to be “in excess of 240 miles per hour.”

TWO BRAZILIANS, THREE PODIUMS

Newman/Haas Racing team files show that this Swift-Ford 010.c, chassis 003, was used in 10 races during the 1999 CART season: Six with Christian Fittipaldi (two podiums), and four with his countryman Roberto Moreno (one podium).

Chassis 003’s first taste of CART race action came at Japan’s Motegi superspeedway on 10 April 1999, where Fittipaldi started from 7th on the grid and finished 3rd to earn his first podium of the season. Fittipaldi and 003 teamed up for another five races together, earning another podium with a 2nd overall finish at Toronto’s Exhibition Place street circuit on 18 July.

Other notable points-producing results were achieved at Long Beach (5th) on 16 April, and Milwaukee (6th) on 4 June.

Shortly after Fittipaldi’s runner-up result at Toronto, Chassis 003 was temporarily reassigned to Roberto Moreno until the season’s 17th round, Laguna Seca’s Honda Grand Prix of Monterey. Moreno’s outing at Laguna Seca on 18 July 1999 was not only his last with 003, but also his most outstanding. Having qualified 14th out of 27 entrants, Moreno deftly used 003 to slice through the field and up into 5th place. With just 21 laps to go, Michael Andretti and Jimmy Vasser collided just behind the 2nd-place car of Max Papis. In the chaos of the incident, Moreno slipped through the wreckage and launched himself right on past a surprised—and now 3rd-placed—Papis for a 2nd-place finish. Chassis 003 was subsequently returned to Fittipaldi for the season’s penultimate round at Surfers Paradise on 17 October, but the car suffered an engine fire.

Fittipaldi and 003 survived but would close out their working relationship just two weeks later during testing for Fontana.

Now offered directly from the stable of Newman/Haas Racing with no engine presently fitted, this podium earning Swift-Ford 010.c chassis is presented in its period-correct Kmart/Duracell livery complete with Christian Fittipaldi’s race number.
